ANNOUNCEMENTS
CMA FIGHTER WINS TITLE!!!
Jessica Johnson won a unanimous decision to capture the Junior K-1 Girls 110-pound division championship at the 2012 WKA North American Combat Sports Championship in Richmond, Va. Johnson is a sophomore at Hart County High School and a nine-year veteran at Contemporary Martial Arts.
Johnson put her opponent on the mat in the first round with a head kick and boxing combination.
"She (Johnson's opponent) came out with some body shots, but I had a lot of success with my overhead right," said Johnson.
Her opponent survived the standing eight count, only to fall again in round two thanks to a knee to the body shot by Johnson. The move forced a second standing eight count.
"I could tell she was getting tired in that second round," said Johnson.
Johnson took over in the third round according to CMA's Chuck Cawthon by "keeping her guard up and always pressing the pace of the fight."
Johnson was happy to get the win, but thought she could have fought a better fight.
"I wish I could have knocked her out," said Johnson Monday. "She got real sloppy in that third round and kept dropping her hands. I was landing some good shots, but just couldn't get her to fall."
Johnson sees fighting as a personal challenge.
"I think for me mentally, it shows how much I can push myself," she said. "I can get kicked and punched in the face and still keep going."
Johnson, who hopes to get back in the ring in May, also enjoys the team environment at CMA.
"We're like a big famiy," said Johnson. "There is a lot of respect for each other and it's cool how we can beat the tar out of each other and then go back to being friends."
Five other CMA fighters competed at the event in Richmond, which was sponsored by the World Kickboxing Association and held March 30-April 1 at the U-Turn Sports Plex.
Sam Stewart, who is also student at HCHS, lost in the finals of the 15-17 Junior Male K-1 division. After receiving a bye in the opening round, Stewart earned a TKO victory in the semifinals.
Brandon Cawthon advanced to the semfinals in the Welterweight Muay Thai division. He lost by unanimous decision.
Cawthon earned a bye in the opening round and used a superman punch to gain a third-round knockout in his quarterfinal fight.
Two CMA fighters were making their debuts. C.J. Hamilton won his opening match in the Featherweight Adult MMA division by unanimous decision, but lost in the semifinals by tap out.
Johnny Burns, fighting in the Men's Welterweight K-1 division, lost by unanimous decision in his only bout of the tournament.
Philip Rounsaville lost his opening fight in the Welterweight Muay Thai division by unanimous decision.

North American Amateur Combat Sports Championships will showcase the best amateurs in North America
On March 30 - April 1, 2012, the Combat Sports League, sanctioned by the World Kickboxing Association - USA, will host an elimination tournament to determine the best fighters in North America. The event includes US, Canadian and Mexican competitors, but it will also be used to select members for the WKA US National Team that will qualify to represent the U.S. at the WKA World Championships.
The World Kickboxing Association is one of the world's oldest and most recognized governing bodies for various forms of Kickboxing. In 2000, the organization formed the WKA USA to oversee Kickboxing competition in the United States and, in 2004, WKA USA added Mixed Martial Arts, BJJ and No Gi Grappling to the portfolio of combat sports that it regulates.
The tournament will include adult and children's divisions in BJJ and No Gi Grappling, Juniors' K-1 Rules and MMA and adult MMA, Thaiboxing, K-1, Full Rules Muay Thai (which allows elbows to the head with elbow pads). We were so pleased with the unprecedented number of competitors in 2010 and 2011 that this year, in order to facilitate the smooth running of the tournament, we will feature a cage and 3 rings, a new registration and check-in process and two days of action as the semi-finals and finals carry over to Sunday!
